Tuesday December 18, 2007

All of the Pack 042 Dens got together for their Den Meetings as a combined Den Meeting evening hosted by "Chef Pierre" learning about the Food Pyramid.  Chef Pierre's antics kept  the  evening  entertaining

as the Pack 042 Scouts tasted foods from all of the food groups and he shared stories of his award winning usage of food; hence the ribbon he wore on his chef outfit.

The evening presentation included enough food to feed the entire French Foreign Legion, as Chef Pierre, in his fake sounding French / Italian with a bit of German accent announced the highlight of the evening, the one food that contained something from every food group in the pyramid; world famous Broadway Pizza.

The December Pack Meeting brought our Pack 042 Scouts and families together to share in the celebration of Christmas; with a Scouting twist. The pack had a special visit from Santa himself and after everyone had an opportunity to sit on Santa's lap, get their picture taken, share their Christmas wishes and even receive a little gift (Pinewood Derby Car kits for Pack  042 Scouts  and  a  candy

cane for all), Scouts enjoyed each others company and made ornaments to hang on their trees.

Pack 042 Scout and their families had a fun time roller skating at the Roller Gardens in St Louis Park and a cool November Saturday afternoon. Many other Scouts and their families from the Metro Lakes District partook in this growing event.

November's Pack Meeting for Pack 042 Scouts and their families focused on cultural diversity learning of some of the traditions of dance based on the Cub Scout theme for November 2007 Indian Nations.

Students from the Oh Day Aki (Heart of the Earth) Minneapolis Charter School / Center for American Indian Education visited Pack 042 and demonstrated many traditional Native American dances while also learning of the culture and traditions of many of America's native residents.

Fulfilling part of the requirements for the Northern Star Council Diversity Award, Pack 042 Scouts and leaders even got a chance to try what they had learned by dancing with the Native American youth who had performed for them in full native regalia.

Pack 042 visited Historic Fort Snelling as a part of its optional Saturday events.  A number of Pack 042's Scouts and their families enjoyed a warm fall day visit.

Not only did they learn of everyday life at the fort in the mid 1800's with special displays, programs and demonstrations, but the Scouts were able to work on their requirements to earn the Fort Snelling Historical Trails Award. Scouts and youth highlighted their visit with partaking in drills with the military personnel of the fort.

Pack 042 welcomed a total of ten new Scouts this year to Cub Scouting.  Welcoming these new Scouts along with seeing most of our returning Scouts from last year was a great way to kick off the new Scouting year.

After introductions and a lot of summer time awards, the Cubmaster had some special awards to announce.  Pack 042 was awarded the National Summertime Pack Award and had one of Bear Scouts who attended every Summer event this summer place the first Pack streamer on the Pack flag staff.   In addition, two Pack 042 Awards of Merit (one bronze and one gold) were awarded to two scouts who went above and beyond the call of Pack 042 with their assistance at the recent 2007 Pack 042 Cub Scout Roundup.

The evening was highlighted by a visit from the Richfield Police Department. Officer Griffin spoke to the Pack 042 Scouts about Crime Prevention, and helped our scouts down the path of earning the Scout Crime Prevention award.  A special thanks goes out to our Richfield Police Department and Officer Griffin.

The start of the new school year for 2007 and time for new Cub Scouts.  Tuesday September 11, 2007 Pack 042 hosted the annual Cub Scout Roundup at St  Richard's  Catholic  Church's Community Room.  We  had  9

new and interested parents with10 very inquisitive potential new scouts.

After the posting of the colors and a quick introduction of the Pack Leadership, the Cubmaster and Chartered Organization Representative gave a 10 minute presentation to the new potential Scouts and their parents.  Shortly thereafter the Richfield Fire Department arrived with their fire engine and gave the boys a hands on tour of the fire truck.  While the boys weathered the cooler than normal temperatures that evening, the parents were given more detailed information on the Cub Scout program and the structure and schedule of Pack 042.

Pack 042 grew in size with a number of new scouts signing up that evening and we all look forward to welcoming these new scouts at our first pack meeting next week

Two Pack 042 Scouts qualified and competed at the 2007 Northern Star Council Pinewood Derby.  Out of 9 Pack 042 Scouts that qualified and competed at the Metro Lakes District Pinewood Derby earlier in April, two placed high enough to move on to compete in the Council level derby.

Neither will be moving on to compete in the national level competition, but friends, family, leaders and other Scouts, came to cheer our Pack 042 Scouts on at this event held in the Main Rotunda area at the Mall of America.

At Pack 042's first official Pack Meeting the United States Marines visited to help dedicate and post the new Pack 042 United States Flag.  The Marines stayed and shared some information and stories of their experiences and even talked about the salute with the Scouts of Pack 042 before opening the floor up to questions from the boys.

After the Marines finished their presentation, two camping staff from the Northern Star Council, (Disco and Scribble) talked to the Pack 042 Scouts about some of the fun they can have at Summer Camp this year.  Disco and Scribble not only got the Scouts excited for camp but had the boys partake in a a song and game as well as doing a skit for them.
