Additional Youth Awards -
Northern Star Council Diversity Award

|
The Diversity Award was created by the
Northern Star Council Diversity Committee to strengthen inclusiveness and create
cultural awareness and understanding. There are four different levels of awards:
Cub Scouts and Webelos
Boy Scouts under age 14
Boy Scouts age 14 and older, and Venturers
Adult Scouters
The award is a temporary patch which may be worn on the right pocket of a Scout
uniform. Each patch has a different look to reflect the level earned.
The symbol on the patch is the mythical Sankofa bird. It teaches us that we must
go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and
gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our
full potential as we move forward. Whatever we have lost, forgotten, forgone or
been stripped of, can be reclaimed, revived, preserved and perpetuated.
Parents interested in addressing and discussing the
subject of Diversity with their children, but don't know where to start or how
to approach it should check out the
"Respecting Diversity: A Parent's Guide to Approaching the Issues of Diversity"
published by the National Crime Prevention Council and distributed by the
Diversity Committee of the Northern Star Council of the BSA. |
